Ayrshire Link formed in November 2000 in direct response to an appeal in the Daily Record. Scottish Coordinator, Marjorie Macfarlane, travelled to Ayrshire to introduce the work of the charity to all who had shown an interest in hosting children.
Before we knew it, all was under way. The first fund raising efforts began within a week, and before the group was even a year old, fifteen children had travelled to Ayrshire for visits to boost their health and wellbeing.
It wasn't only the day-to-day members of the group who pooled their resources, but a supportive medical community of Doctors, Dentists and Opticians, who all contributed their time and effort towards improving the health of the children.
In Belarus, drugs to treat Thyroid Cancer and other radiation linked sickness are in very short supply, there is no anaesthetic at the dentist (they simply can't afford to use it.), and a pair of glasses is a luxury item that few can ever own.
Ayrshire Link is a real melting pot of people and ideas, but there can never be too many. New members always have a contribution to make, and it's a good cause that people can gain real pleasure providing for.
Although the main aim of Ayrshire Link is to find host families for the children, if hosting is not for you there are still many other activities.
Fundraising, organising an event for the children, interpreting, collecting clothes and toys, or supporting some of the other projects of Chernobyl Children's Lifeline are all jobs that need doing and all contribute equally to the goal.
